Late Form Not Enough For Stags:

Mundford went into the 2007/08 campaign full of promise having only lost one of there their 4 pre-season friendlies. Despite losing 11 first team players from the squad that was relegated from Division 1 the previous season, the Stags did however manage to keep hold of Nick Quantrill, Dan Barnes, Jon Maslin, Craig Burton & Chris Brown.A serious injury prevented established 1st team regular Neil Groves from appearing all season. New manager Donovan Thompson also managed to acquire a host of new players in Adam Powell, Laurence Mann, Jonny Pereira & various reserve team players that had made the step up.

His first game in charge saw the team suffer a 3-0 home reverse to a very physical West Lynn side leaving the Stags rock bottom after only one game. Mundford then travelled to Corton with a make shift side and went down to an 11-0 thumping leaving many of the players contemplating what sort of season there was in store.

The Stags at least managed their first league goal of the season with Ben Williams managing to grab a consolation goal away to Reepham Town, but sadly again the game saw Mundford come away with another defeat this time losing 3-1. It was beginning to look like this would be a very hard season for the new man in charge, with Mundford making it 4 defeats on the bounce when they lost 2-0 away to Beccles Caxton. This defeat was coupled with injuries to key players & the loss of new signing Laurence Mann for the rest of the season.

Mundford were back at the Glebe the following week but even the return of Nicky Quantrill to the starting 11 couldnt inspire the team to victory over Anglian Windows, with the Stags going down 2-0. Bungay Town were next to condemn the team to yet another defeat with a 2-1 win leaving Mundford on 0 points after 6 games & only having two Ben Williams goals to show for their efforts.

The next game saw the Stags take a well-needed break from the pressures of the league when they visited St Andrews Reserves in the cup. The team sat 2 leagues below Mundford in Division 4. This game saw the team finally avoid defeat in a thrilling end-to-end game that ended 1-1 aet with Craig Burton grabbing a deserved equaliser. A replay back at the Glebe the following week could see the Stags try and progress. The match also saw the last appearance in a Mundford shirt for Adam Powell who had been an ever present figure in the team since the start of the season.

The return leg again saw the teams go into extra time with St Andrews Reserves winning the match 4-2. However despite another defeat this game was to provide a significant turning point in the Stags season with current manager Donovan Thompson stepping down after the game & being replaced by Pete Brassett. The new manager had only been asked to come over and assist Donovan the week before & now found himself trying to orchestrate the team out of their precarious league position, with the help of 4 additional players he instantly added to the squad.

New signings Steven Moulton, Gary Hawkins & Ben Smith all went straight into the cup game at Marlingford the following week with Jon Maslin also returning to the squad after a month lay off. The gaffer also added two youth players into the squad. Mundford managed to put in probably their best performance of the season & with two Dan Barnes goals looked to have won the tie until a late penalty sent the match into extra time. With the last kick of the game the Stags conceded, losing for the second straight week in extra time.

The teams next visit was a tough trip to Caister FC that saw Mundford put in a very professional display giving Caister a run for their money. The match finished 4-2 to the hosts with Lewis Garner & Dan Barnes grabbing the goals for a much improved Mundford side. On the road again Mundford this time managed to get their first points of the season in 11 games disposing of Gt Yarmouth Reserves 2-1 with Jon Maslin & Craig Burton on the score sheet. Having secured a moral boosting win the previous week the Stags were brought back down to earth with a 5-0 hammering at home to local rivals Downham Town Reserves where at one point the score was 0-0 going into the break.

Despite better performances in their next 3 games Mundford went down 2-1 (home) & 4-2 (Away) to Poringland and were thrashed 7-2 by Beccles Caxton. The Poringland defeat happened to be the final piece of action for Dan Barnes who suffered a groin injury that was to keep him out until the start of the New Year when he was then deployed to Afghanistan.

The next game away to Aylsham Wanderers saw a battle of the bottom two with the Stags coming away with a very creditable 2-2 result having dominated the play for long periods of the game. A makeshift side the following week saw the team humbled by a rampant Bungay Town 7-1 & put a further dent in the players confidence. The match even saw the gaffer put his kit on for the second half of the match due to an injury to Mundford's stand in keeper.

As if things couldnt have got worse runaway league leaders Corton were the next visitors to the Glebe. The Stags unbelievably found themselves 2-0 up at half time but two stunning long-range strikes helped Corton grab a point and the match finished 2-2. Mundford again managed to get a 1-1 draw at Anglian Windows the following week & it was beginning to look as though the team were starting to come good. A 5-1 home defeat to Norwich St Johns & 1-0 defeat away to West Lynn SCC on Terry Fendleys return to the club saw the Stags go into the New Year on 6 points. The team were bottom of the league with a mountain to climb.

Mundford started the New Year in fantastic spirit despite early set backs losing 4-2 at home to Horsford United after leading 2-0 at half time & also an undeserved 2-1 away defeat to Norwich United Reserves. Then came a incredible series of results that saw the team record their first home win in more than 13 months and then go on a 5 match unbeaten run with 4 back to back home wins over Gt Yarmouth Town Reserves (2-0), Wortwell (3-1), Aylsham Wanderers (3-1), Reepham Town (2-1) & a point away to Wortwell in a 0-0 draw. Craig Ramages return to the club from Brandon had definately inspired the team during their unbeaten streak.

The run of results saw the Stags come within 4 points of their nearest rivals but having played far more matches. A 6-2 reversal to Norwich St Johns with Keith Thompson missing a penalty with the game poised at 2-2 was followed by a convincing 3-0 victory over Norwich United Reserves at the Glebe meant Mundford were not going to end their season without a fight.

A 5-1 defeat to Horsford United meant that Mundford would need to win their two remaining games to avoid the drop. The first of those fixtures saw a convincing 3-1 home win over high fliers Caister FC and meant with a point from their last game at Downham Town Reserves, after other results had gone their way would keep Mundford in Division 2 for next season.

Unfortunately for the Stags, Downham 1st team had a break in their fixture list so the Reserves managed to field 6+ first team regulars as they beat Mundford 1-0 in a very tight game, with the Downham 1st team captain scoring the goal that would send them down. However due credit should go to the side that manager Pete Brassett had managed to put together in such a short period of time. The team were completely written off going into the New Year but in turn managed to take their season right to the wire & missed out by a point.

With the current crop of players at the club, the addition of other key players who had missed much of the season & a few new faces, Mundford will definitely be a force to reckon with for the up and coming campaign.
